Weight update
So here's what we did, we checked out the label of all the food that we buy for Eidan and picked out the ones with the highest calories such as bananas and yogurt. We also tried to increase his milk intake from 4oz every 3 hours to 6oz. The problem is the more solid he takes, the lesser milk he drinks. Also, most of the time, he just wouldn't take his milk. =( I'd be frantic on days when he would only take 10oz!. It's not just the weight that will be his problem if this continues. Dehydration is next. *sigh*
Since we wanted to increase his calorie intake, the doctor suggested for us to add a scoop of milk with his solid purees. But since he drinks lesser milk, we asked if we can increase it to two scoops. The doctor said yes as long as he takes it. We were somehow able to put in more calories into Eidan. However, this made him constipated. I read that too much dairy (and fruits such as applesauce and bananas) can cause constipation. Because I was so focused on increasing his weight, his diet was no longer balance. I took away his greens and fibers, unknowingly. =S
Since we have to balance his diet, we have to find some other ways to 'fatten' our little peanut. We have to try to make him take all his milk. If it's possibly the flavor, I tried adding a bit of prune juice to his formula to change it's taste. Luckily that worked most of the time! Especially if we give him his milk straight from the fridge. Yup! He likes it cold now. I also added Raagi to his diet. It is an Indian flour that is high in calorie. We also tried avocadoes and egg yolks.
We also got an appointment with a dietitian last Monday to evaluate Eidan and get some suggestions. She suggested that we add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to all the purees because it is calorie dense. She also mentioned the possible use of DuoCal. It is a medical food that provides fat and carbohydrates. We have yet to ask Eidan's pedia if we can proceed with this.
Phew! I never knew that increasing a baby's calorie intake would take so much work, research and planning. Hopefully our efforts will pay off once Eidan goes in for his next weight check.
